ATM Purchase Information and Tips

Purchase from an established firm. Otherwise, the more time your ATM is out of service later, the more surcharge fee and sales income your business is losing.

– ATM Model: Keep it simple. For ease of use for both the ATM owner and the cardholder using the ATM to withdraw cash, the Genmega line of ATM’s is the way to go. Other model ATM’s may be more complicated to use for the owner/operator, are not necessarily quick to fix or bring back into service if there is an issue.

– ATM Cost: Average cost of a stand-alone ATM in 2025 ranges from $2,500.00 to $2,900.00 depending on applicable warranties/service contracts, and added features. Reputable firms may offer used (as is) or refurbished (cleaned inside and out, has been fully inspected/repaired and has current software, etc. etc.) in the price range for $1,400.00+ for used or $1,900.00+ for refurbished, and will stand behind that pricing with applicable warranty and/or service contracts.

Tip: Keep in mind that new ATM’s now in 2025 priced unusually low at $2,000.00 may be a hook to then charge you additional monthly fees or charges – buyer beware. It is not uncommon for Resellers on atm4mybusiness.com to then field “I bought this ATM from X and I can’t reach them or get my ATM fixed – can you help?” phone calls and messages.

Tip: If cash flow is tight, a reputable firm will have a traditional lease program to offer if you’re an existing and licensed business.

– ATM Seller: You cannot buy an ATM directly from a manufacturer, but only through a network of resellers. Keep in mind, most resellers online are one/two people operations and if you look closely at their websites, there is only a phone number for contact and a claim they service the entire U.S., but do not provide a physical address, or mailing address, or where they are actually located, or how long they have been in business.

Tip: Resellers on atm4mybusiness.com are established businesses that have industry experience and have a minimum of 5+ years or more in business.

Purchase from an established firm. Otherwise, the more time your ATM is out of service later, the more surcharge fee and sales income your business is losing.

– ATM Surcharge Fee: Believe it or not, this is not the first consideration when people are looking to purchase an ATM for their business, but it’s the most important, and it’s your return on investment for the purchase of the ATM for your business. ATM Surcharge Fee, the amount charged for withdrawals from an ATM, can be set at any amount; from $0.00 to $3.00 to $5.00 or more. Average surcharge fee in the U.S. for 2025 is $3.00+

Set your surcharge fee at a reasonable amount based on a few factors and considerations:

More Traffic to Your Business: An ATM can bring more traffic to your business; people do look for and of course prefer to use a low surcharge fee ATM.

My ATM Fee or the Highway: Its either use the ATM in the corner of our business with a $10.00 surcharge fee or get into your car and drive to your bank to get cash for free. Keep in mind though, this strategy often leads to people not returning to your business, and people not using the ATM as much as possible.

Fair Fee: $1.00 to $2.75 is a fair surcharge fee range.

Tip: An ATM surcharge fee can be lowered or raised as needed.

Tip: Keep the ATM surcharge fee fair and reasonable based on your overall business operations.

ATM Location and Installation Considerations:

You will need the following for the placement of an ATM at your business:

– Space for ATM (approximately two square feet is a good rule of thumb).

– Standard electrical outlet for power to ATM.

– Ethernet (Internet) connection to allow ATM to communicate out and in.

Tip: When you purchase an ATM, ensure you have Ethernet connection ready where the ATM will be at. Waiting for the last minute to ensure you have this in place will delay getting your new ATM up and running.

Hack: “My router is full of connections from the POS, security system, desktop computer, etc. etc.. You can plug another switch/router into your Modem (the device provided by your Cable company / Internet provider) or existing Router to allow you more ports (ethernet cable connections), and to plug your ATM into.

Tip: Consider a wall-mount ATM, such as the Genmega Onyx, when floor space is at a premium.

– ATM Cash: With the purchase of your own ATM, you will need to stock the ATM with cash. The ATM cash you stock/load into an ATM will deposit back your bank account each business banking day unless you elect to use a different deposit schedule. Most ATM’s dispense $20.00 bills.

Tip: A common misunderstanding is that you must stock ATM to its maximum capacity, this is not true. You can load a minimum of $1,000.00 into an ATM, but depending on usage, you may need to load more, etc.

– ATM for Cash Only Sales: Many businesses are going cash only to eliminate hassles with checks (people still write checks – and they will most likely have a debit card anyway), credit card fees, or even credit (such as a bar tab on a credit card that gets declined at the end of someone’s party, etc.). With that, an ATM eliminates those hassles and saves you on monthly merchant credit card processing fees. The numbers are simple if you look at 5 years of merchant credit card processing fees.

Merchant Credit Card Fee Expense at $300.00 (for example) per month X 12 months = $3,600.00 X 5 years = $18,000.00 Expense.

ATM Surcharge Fee Income: $3.00 surcharge fee X 100 transactions per month = $300.00 X 12 months = $3,600.00 X 5 years = $18,000.00 minus cost of ATM ($3,000.00 rounded up) = $15,000.00 PROFIT.  Keep in mind, some locations may do more or less than 100 transactions per month.

Even if you still need to accept credit/debit cards and cannot go fully cash only, you can still reduce your monthly merchant credit card expenses from anywhere from 10% to 50%.
